Environmentally Friendly, Plastic Free Toothbrushes
In Australia alone, over 30 million plastic toothbrushes are used and disposed of by Australians each year, amounting to approximately 1,000 tonnes of landfill each year. In the United States it is estimated that over 850 million toothbrushes are discarded and end up in landfill every single year. Each of us will use and replace around 300 toothbrushes during our lifetime (4 toothbrushes per year). A single conventional toothbrush weighs approximately 18 grams (.63 oz.). So each of us will throw away about 12 pounds of plastic toothbrushes in our lifetime. There are 6.8 billion people on the planet. Plastic toothbrush waste generated during our lifetime = 80 billion pounds.
We need to brush our teeth, of course. But the problem with plastic toothbrushes is that they mostly can’t be recycled due to the mix in materials commonly used. And therefore they end up in landfill or the ocean where they will exist forever, because plastic does not ever break down. Over decades or more, plastic will break up into smaller and smaller pieces of plastic (micro plastic) which is even more harmful to wildlife and to humans, as it easily is mistaken for food by sealife and ends up in our food and waterways.
An Easy Solution
Therefore it’s important to make the very easy switch from a plastic toothbrush to an eco-friendly alternative. We favour bamboo toothbrushes above all else as they are made from a renewable and compostable material. If bamboo isn’t your thing, we also do offer biodegradable options made from corn starch. Our toothbrushes all feature bristles made from Nylon 4 which is proven to breakdown in compost and landfill environments. Choosing an environmentally friendly toothbrush is a very quick and easy thing to for you to do which will have no impact on you but will have a huge impact on the planet.
