How Daily Coconut Began
In short, I started becoming aware of a number of environmental issues and it had such a huge impact on me that I did a complete 360 on the direction of my business. I realised sustainability was an area I was very passionate about, and that my hard work could actually contribute to a greater good. I didn’t know that you cannot recycle the majority of disposable barista coffee cups. I didn’t know that most plastic toothbrushes cannot be recycled. I had no idea that so much of our garbage is sat in landfills, drip feeding toxins into our earth which in turn, cause many major illnesses. These toxins end up in our food and waterways as they break down. I had no idea whatsoever about how pollution and plastic waste are killing marine wildlife and creating huge areas of ocean which are completely inhabitable. I always recycled (mostly), but I didn’t think about what was happening to my trash once it left my hands – I thought that for something to end up in the ocean because of me, I would have to physically put it there myself – which I would never do. I don’t think I am alone in my unintentional ignorance to these environmental issues. I have been living wastefully for so long, blissfully unaware of the harm I was causing and without a thought in the world at how large my footprint on this planet had become. I began to learn more about sustainable living and environmental issues…

I Discovered Some Shocking Facts
Plastic cannot be disposed of, so technically every piece of plastic ever created could still exist somewhere.
In the first 10 years of this century, the world economy produced more plastic than in the entire 1900’s.
Most of the hundreds of millions of tons of plastic that we produce every year is not recyleable or biodegradable, and is made of a material which is designed to last forever.
The agriculture industry is the number ONE cause of greenhouse gasses.
If we fed those in need with the grains fed to the animals we eat, we would end world hunger.
World-wide, only 10% of plastic items are recycled.
Toxic chemicals from our garbage are in our water, food, and bloodstream. Studies confirm they can cause cancer.
An estimated 300 million plastic bags end up in the ocean due to escaping the garbage.
Deadzones the size of Wales in the U.K and New Mexico in the U.S exist in the oceans – vast areas of ocean which are completely uninhabitable due to our pollution.
Deforestation, greenhouse gases and pollution are driving our wildlife, weather, and our planet, to a place where we really do not want it to go!
This really is just scratching the surface!
